Why do I need to take iron during my pregnancy?

11-12 weeks pregnant, Health advice, Postnatal, Questions/answers, Your questions

Marie,

The doctor told me I’m anemic, and I need to take iron supplements to compensate. I was so upset that I didn’t ask what it might mean for my baby and me. Can you tell me about this, please?

Caroline

Being anemic means that the iron content in your blood isn’t sufficient compared to the average quantity everyone needs. This can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as extreme fatigue, lack of energy, different imbalances that can affect your emotions (your general morale). Concerning you, you have both your own needs to be met but also those of your baby. You probably know that iron is essential for their growth and if you don’t have enough, this can cause problems for their development. Many different sources of iron are found in a diet, some better than others. Come and read my article Iron and Pregnancy to learn all the details.
