Why induce when I already have contractions?

Delivery, Your questions

My friend Melissa told me that the doctor induced her labour, but she already had contractions. I don’t understand why she was induced when she already had contractions. Can you explain this to me? Anne-Sophie

Excellent question, Anne-Sophie.

In fact, there is a difference between inducing labour and stimulating labour.

When we talk about inducing or starting labour, we initiate contractions using a synthetic hormone. The woman may have had a few contractions, but not regular ones.

When we talk about stimulation, the woman also receives a synthetic hormone, but this time it’s to strengthen contractions or to make them more regular to advance labour. So I think from your question your friend was stimulated and not induced. But many people confuse the two.

I hope this helps!
