I want to become pregnant. Do I need to take vitamins and folic acid?

Health advice

Marie, my friend said I should take vitamins and folic acid even before my pregnancy to prevent certain illnesses in the baby. Is she right? If yes, what should I choose?

Thanks,
Katia

She’s right, you should take vitamins containing folic acid at least three months before conceiving your baby. Since many pregnancies occur unexpectedly, it’s wise to take them now to optimise your future baby’s development and health. Please read my article Vitamins and Folic Acid for more details. I talk about the most recent recommendations from the Canadian Nutrition Society (April 2018).
