Health advice, Postnatal

There are many possible pharmacological treatments which help soothe and heal nipple injuries.

  • 100% purified lanolin cream can certainly be suggested.
  • Jack Newman cream can be prescribed, which is also known as triple cream or crème magistrale. Why? Because it is a combination of three creams – anti-fungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. It is normally very effective.
  • To soothe mom, she can take ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol) and an anti-inflammatory (naproxen) on a regular basis. You can also use an antibacterial unguent if there is a superinfection of the nipple. Nipple Shield and hydrogel coussinets can also help during breastfeeding.
  • If you have a deeper wound or an ulceration, you will require antibiotic therapy.

In a situation with injuries, high levels of pain, you need to be followed by your health professional until it is healed.

We never want to see a mother who is breastfeeding get injured. As a health professional, we would rather prevent it than try to fix it. The earlier the intervention, the more likely you will heal your wounds faster and continue your breastfeeding adventure with your baby.

This entry will probably help some of you improve your situation, but don’t forget that there are specialised resources for breastfeeding in your area and each situation is unique, which requires a full evaluation.

Don’t give up! There are always solutions for difficult situations…

Keep it up!
