I am worried that my baby isn’t eating enough.

Postnatal, Your questions

My baby is 9.5 months old and doesn’t eat a lot, and I am concerned. I am scared he isn’t getting enough vitamins and other things for his growth. What should I do? Thanks for your advice, Ghislaine.

Ghislaine, it’s always a good idea to ask questions to avoid future deficiencies. However, I want to reassure you because a loss of appetite is also part of child development for some. Their growth stabilises, and games and other activities become more attractive than food. Also, when they are tired, have discomfort (teething), they will likely not want to eat.

You can start by checking if his growth curve is stable. You can also keep a logbook where you note the quantities and types of foods he eats over 24 hours. This can help you better evaluate the general situation. Let him eat on his own and give him small portions during meals and snack time. Finally, choose colourful foods with different textures, which may help draw his attention to his food. Give him his milk at the end of the meal only, so that he is not full before the meal starts.

Those are a few of my suggestions to help your situation. If your baby’s eating habits don’t improve, you should have him seen by a health professional.
