What should I do if my baby chokes or stops breathing?

Postnatal, Questions/answers, Your questions

Marie, I will be giving birth soon, and I am scared about returning home. It’s because I don’t know what to do if my baby chokes or stops breathing. Will someone show us what to do in the hospital before we leave?

Thanks, Claudiane

Claudiane, that’s an excellent question! Often parents wonder what they would do if this occurs, but then never learn. An ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure. Don’t wait for something bad to happen before learning what to do. Unfortunately, staff in maternity wards don’t really talk about this. You need to take your own steps to learn how to react to choking, respiratory arrest, etc.

Please read an article I wrote with Karl, a paramedic, the learn about first-aid for a baby.

Talk soon,
