Suggested preparation list for your hospital bag:

(You should prepare it around 34 weeks of pregnancy)

Documents:

  • Map to the hospital/delivery location
  • Health insurance card
  • Private insurance card if applicable
  • List of your medications you are taking
  • Your wishes and expectations (birthing plan* in french)
  • Cell phone and telephone numbers and long-distance calling card if needed
  • Paper and pen

For mom:

  • Comfortable clothing: warm socks, pyjamas, underwear, bathrobe, slippers and clothing for the return home
  • Toiletries: lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, hairbrush and deodorant
  • Large sanitary napkins and disposable underwear*
  • Kleenex
  • Soft toilet paper 😊
  • Nursing cushion
  • Nursing bras and compresses
  • Magic bag
  • Hairdryer
  • Sandals for the shower
  • 2 pillows
  • Breastfeeding pillow
  • Breastfeeding bra and breastfeeding pads

For dad or partner:

  • Comfortable clothing and shoes
  • Toiletries
  • Sleeping bag or blanket if needed

For the baby:

  • 1 package of 24 newborn diapers
  • 4 pyjamas (newborn and 0-3 month sizes), 2 pairs of socks, 1 pair of mittens and 1 cotton bonnet
  • 4 onesies or diaper covers
  • 2 thin blankets and 2 thicker blankets, 2 couvertures minces et 2 couvertures plus épaisses
  • Bath articles: mild soap, hydrating cream, baby shampoo, Vaseline or ointment for their buttocks
  • Clothing for the return home depending on the season
  • Regulatory car seat (mandatory)

Miscellaneous items:

  • Camera or digital device to take photos if you wish
  • Sports drinks with electrolytes, no energy drinks (ex.: Gatorade)
  • Snacks (meals and snacks are usually only provided for mom)
  • Mints or gum
  • Music device
  • Books or magazines
  • Sleep mask
  • Money for parking
  • A large water bottle
  • Surprises for other children
  • If early hospitalisation, think about entertaining things to bring

*Disposable underwear is more expensive than sanitary napkins but is more comfortable and practical – and you won’t stain your underwear.
