My baby hasn’t regained their birth weight. Should I be worried?

Postnatal, Your questions

Marie, my baby is one week old and has not regained its birth weight. The nurses seem to be really worried. I don’t feel secure, and I don’t know if I should continue breastfeeding. I am really anxious. Please help! Alice

Alice, it’s normal that you are worried about your baby, but they are only one week old! You have to give yourself time to get to know them and start breastfeeding. Every mother, baby and situation is unique. When we evaluate your baby’s weight gain, you have to look at the whole situation: type of childbirth, baby jaundice, engorgement, premature birth, latching, milk production, etc.

Please read my article Newborn Weight Gain for more information.
