I smoked pot before I knew I was pregnant!

Questions/answers

Marie, I’m worried because I just learned I’m pregnant and I remembered that I smoked two or three joints during the weeks after conception. I wasn’t planning on being pregnant! Do you think this will affect my baby? Thank you for any information you can give me, as I feel really guilty!

Sara

Sara, you can’t change the past. Now, like for alcohol and tobacco, it is never too late to stop using pot to give your baby the chance to develop properly. We always suggest stopping pot use before conceiving a baby, but in your situation, you have acted quickly to promote the best for you and the baby. Congratulations! And even if you used a bit of pot after you were pregnant, I encourage you to abstain for the rest. Please read my article about marijuana and pregnancy for more information. Also, talk to your friends who might want to become pregnant, as this is useful information for them too.
