My placenta is poorly positioned. Can I give birth vaginally?

19-20 weeks pregnant, Health advice, Questions/answers

Marie, my doctor told me I could have a scheduled cesarean because my placenta is too low. I was very surprised when he told me and I didn’t understand what that involved if I were to give birth vaginally. Can you explain this to me?

Jessica

You need to know the position of the placenta to evaluate if you can give birth naturally. If the placenta is placed above the cervix, it could detach during pregnancy or labour and lead to bleeding and emergency surgery to remove the baby as quickly as possible. Please read my article about the placenta and you will understand what your doctor was talking about.

Marie
