Hello,

My name is Etienne, and I will be a father in a few months. I am slowly learning about my new role.

I don’t know what to expect. I am open and aware of everything new that is happening to my partner and in my life. I was surprised that I had nausea the other day (couvade syndrome)! Luckily I heard about this from a colleague and knew it could happen sometimes, so I wasn’t worried.

I am watching my partner become a mother in her head and body, and it sometimes stresses me when we have sexual relations. I am scared I will hurt her or the baby…We talked about it together and with a nurse who helped reassure us.

During our monitoring visits, I heard the baby’s heart. Wow! So many emotions! It confirmed that there’s a little person in there! I know I have to support my partner and be patient with her as her moods can swing. She needs more hugs, she has to pee all the time, and her shortness of breath means I have to change my walking pace.

I must admit that these days, I’m worried that the baby will develop abnormalities. I’ve been told about the screening tests that can be carried out as early as the 10th week of pregnancy via a blood test, i.e., the fetal DNA test, which provides even more specific information on the presence or absence of certain pathologies or syndromes that can now be detected very early in the fetus’ genetic code.

That’s why I’ll soon be going with her for blood tests at the same time as screening for Trisomy 21 (in french only), DNA testing and the ultrasound for the nuchal translucency. I can’t wait to see my new child with my own eyes! I know it’s already moving, even if my partner and I can’t feel it yet. It measures between 30-60 mm (5.5-7.5 cm) and weighs between 10-18 grams.

Here are a few things that can help you at 9-10 weeks of pregnancy:

  • Dad, adapt your activities based on your partner’s capacities and limits. Encourage her to be active if she has enough energy.
  • Mom may have a fungal infection (Candida). She should treat this infection quickly, and the treatment will not impact her or the baby.
  • Drink lots of water (at least four glasses) to eliminate toxins, help bowel movements and prevent urinary infections that frequently occur in pregnant women.
  • Don’t forget to write down all your questions before going in for your pregnancy appointments. They will take place each month at the start, then every two weeks from 32 weeks pregnant, and each week after 37 until delivery. To help you with these appointments, print out my free Pregnancy Booklet (in french) with your subscription.
  • Fathers who go to these appointments can ask questions and listen to the caregiver’s explanations throughout the pregnancy.
  • Dads, don’t forget to take loving care of Mom. She needs to feel that you love her and are there for her.

Here are some suggestions to learn more about what’s happening to you and to help you prepare for what’s coming.
