I’m pregnant and have reflux. What can I take?

Questions/answers

Marie, I have gastric reflux that is frequently a real problem. I’m 24 weeks pregnant and have modified my diet, but nothing works. Help! What can I take that won’t harm my baby?

Thanks in advance! Kristelle

Kristelle,

Kristelle, it’s great you asked this question before taking anything. There is a wide range of treatments that are risk-free for you and your baby. First, in addition to adapting your diet (which you already tried), there are alternative methods that can help. These can include osteopathy and acupuncture. There are antacids you can occasionally take during pregnancy, one hour after you eat, such as Maalox, Tums and Gaviscon. However, if you take other medications at the same time, you have to advise your doctor first to make sure they are compatible. If you have to take several antacid treatments a day with mitigated results, you should see your doctor to get a prescribed medication adapted to your situation.

Please read my article Medications and Pregnancy to learn more. I hope it helps, and that you feel better soon!
